Dr Susan Lomax is a Lecturer and Programme Support Tutor at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), where she supports students in lab exercises, teaches computing fundamentals and operating systems, and supervises Final Year and MSc projects. She holds a PhD from the University of Salford (focusing on Cost-Sensitive Decision Tree Learning), an MSc, and a BSc (with the Athena Prize). Her research interests include cost-sensitive learning, decision trees, expert systems, and feature selection, alongside programming and database systems. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a Member of the British Computer Society (MBCS).
- Education: PhD (Salford), MSc, BSc (Athena Prize recipient)
Her research explores the impact of data structure on machine learning algorithms and emphasizes practical applications like churn analysis. She has published in journals such as ACM Computing Surveys and The Computer Journal, focusing on decision tree methodologies and cost-sensitive frameworks. Notable outputs include a comprehensive survey of cost-sensitive decision tree algorithms and a taxonomy of such techniques.
She has held roles as a Data Scientist in a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), contributing to increased company turnover via churn analysis, and as a Research Assistant at the University of Manchester’s Cathie Marsh Centre, analyzing UK migration patterns. Her work spans data mining, automation, and educational material development for machine learning courses.
- Awards: Athena Prize (2004)
In teaching, she supports units like Programming, Advanced Programming, and Algorithms/Data Structures. Her supervision includes projects in game design (e.g., dice/card games) and her research areas. She also manages personal tutoring for Level 5 students and contributes to apprenticeship programs.
