Susan L. Swain is a distinguished Professor of Pathology at UMass Chan Medical School, holding multiple appointments across the T.H. Chan School of Medicine and Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Her academic journey spans over four decades, beginning at UCSD where she rose from Lecturer to Professor of Biology in Residence, followed by leadership roles as Director and President of the Trudeau Institute, before joining UMass Medical School in 2010.
Dr. Swain's research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of CD4 T cell immunity, with particular emphasis on T cell memory formation, cytotoxic CD4 effectors, and age-related immune deficiencies. Her laboratory has made seminal contributions to understanding how memory CD4 T cells provide protection against influenza infection and how aging affects T cell function. Current research priorities include discovering new mechanisms used by memory CD4 T cells for effective immunity and defining age-associated defects to develop strategies to overcome them.
Analysis of Dr. Swain's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on CD4 T cell memory checkpoints, the requirements for generating protective memory cells, and the impact of aging on immune responses. Her work demonstrates that persistent infection signals at effector checkpoints determine memory cell fates, and that age-associated B cells play critical roles in immune responses in the elderly. The research has significant implications for improving vaccine efficacy in aging populations.
Among her notable honors are the NIH Merit Award (awarded twice), New York State Woman of Distinction, and the American Association of Immunologists Lifetime Achievement Award. She previously served as President of the American Association of Immunologists (2004) and has held numerous editorial positions including Deputy Editor of the Journal of Immunology.
Dr. Swain actively mentors students through rotation projects focusing on CD4 T cell memory, cytotoxic CD4 effectors, and aging immunity. Her laboratory provides opportunities for postdoctoral researchers interested in T cell memory development and survival. She has served on numerous national advisory boards including the National Advisory Council on Aging (2008-2012) and the Scientific Advisory Board of the La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology.
