Dr. Susan Hegarty is an Associate Professor in the School of History and Geography at Dublin City University (DCU), and serves as Institutional Lead for DCU Futures within the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Her research focuses on citizen science for water quality monitoring, Irish landscape evolution, and historical mineral resource exploitation. She actively engages in public outreach through documentaries and citizen science projects, emphasizing fieldwork’s role in geography education. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, her work bridges academic research with community engagement, addressing environmental challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
Her research interests include catchment-scale water management, Quaternary geology’s impact on water vulnerability, and the historical use of Irish mineral resources. She has contributed to understanding subglacial landscapes and pollutants in water sources, while advocating for sustainable development goals through citizen science initiatives.
