Susan H. Whiting is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington in Seattle. She holds adjunct appointments in the Jackson School of International Studies and the School of Law. Her expertise spans Chinese and comparative politics, with a focus on the political economy of development, property rights, authoritarian regimes, and fiscal reform. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from Yale University.
Whiting’s research explores themes such as land property rights in China, the role of law in authoritarian systems, and fiscal reform dynamics. She has published widely, including her seminal book *Power and Wealth in Rural China: The Political Economy of Institutional Change* (Cambridge University Press, 2001), and contributed to studies for organizations like the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. Her teaching covers comparative politics, Chinese politics, and authoritarian regimes.
Her current projects include investigations into land rights, legal frameworks in authoritarian contexts, and fiscal policy impacts. She has been on sabbatical and actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations through her affiliated schools.
