Dr. Susan Flavin is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Trinity College Dublin. Her research focuses on trade, consumption, and material culture in Early Modern Britain and Ireland, with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. She leads the ERC-funded FoodCult project (2019-2024), exploring food consumption and cultural identity in 16th-17th century Ireland through collaboration with historians, archaeologists, and computational scientists.
Her teaching includes modules on Ireland's history (1534-1815) and food, drink, and society in Early Modern Europe. She supervises postgraduate research in consumption patterns, material culture, and social/cultural themes in early modern contexts.
Flavin’s publications span books and articles analyzing material culture, trade networks, and social dynamics in early modern Ireland and Britain. Her work bridges historical analysis with archaeological and economic methodologies, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary research.
Her current project, FoodCult, investigates how food consumption shaped cultural identity during a transformative period of Irish history. This collaborative effort integrates historical records with archaeological findings to provide a nuanced understanding of daily life and societal changes.
