Susan Cooper is an Associate Professor and Associate Head for Undergraduate Student Experience in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Science. She holds a PhD from Queen's University (2005) and has held academic positions at Central Michigan University, North Dakota State University, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research bridges commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics, with focus areas including the Eisenbud-Green-Harris Conjecture, symbolic powers of ideals, and Hilbert functions.
Dr. Cooper teaches courses spanning linear algebra, algebraic geometry, and combinatorial commutative algebra. She has developed innovative outreach programs including MAGIC (Math and Girls in Contact) camps and sensory-focused mathematics curricula. Her research has been supported by NSERC Discovery Grants, and she serves on editorial boards for journals including Sociology and Cultural Sociology.
Honors include the Faculty of Science Award for Early Researcher Innovation in Teaching (2019) and multiple nominations for outstanding teaching awards. She actively mentors graduate students and leads research on sensory dimensions of mathematical learning.
