Susan A. Thornton is a Visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and Senior Fellow at the Paul Tsai China Center. She is also Director of the Forum on Asia-Pacific Security at the National Committee on American Foreign Policy and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. With nearly three decades of U.S. State Department experience, her career focused on Eurasia, East Asia, and policy toward China, Korea, and the former Soviet Union. She has held leadership roles in U.S. embassies across Central Asia, Russia, the Caucasus, and China.

Thornton speaks Mandarin and Russian and serves on nonprofit boards. Her professional affiliations include leadership roles in strategic security initiatives and academic institutions focused on China and global policy.
