Dr. Suraiya Rasheed is a Professor of Pathology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on proteomics of cancer and neuronal cells, HIV infection mechanisms, and molecular characterization of human retroviruses (e.g., HTLV-I/II, HIV-I/II) linked to cancer and AIDS. She leads the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and AIDS Research, exploring viral oncogenes, drug resistance mutations, and AIDS-related lymphoma pathogenesis.
Education: PhDs from the University of London (1964) and Osmania University (1958), with a Master’s in Science from Osmania University (1955). A Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRC Path) since 1993, she is affiliated with the American Society for Microbiology and the International AIDS Society.
Key research themes include HIV proteomics, retroviral genomics, and translational studies on antiviral therapies. Recent work highlights biomarker discovery for HIV-associated heart disease and novel angiogenic pathways. Over 60 peer-reviewed articles span virology, oncology, and molecular diagnostics, with contributions to AIDS clinical trials and drug resistance analysis.
Her laboratory bridges basic science and clinical application, addressing viral pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies in both cancer and infectious diseases. Grants and collaborations support her work in global health and molecular epidemiology.
