Supriya Chakrabarti is a Professor and Director of the Department of Physics and Applied Physics at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell (UMass Lowell). Previously, he held leadership roles at Boston University, including Director of the Center for Space Physics (1997–2009), and was a Senior Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory. He earned his B.E. from the University of Calcutta and his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.
His research focuses on space experiments, hyperspectral imaging, lidar technology, exoplanets, interstellar medium, planetary atmospheres, and instrumentation development. Notable contributions include developing instruments for NASA sounding rockets, satellite missions, and a patented UV detector. His work addresses space weather prediction, solar-terrestrial interactions, and exoplanet imaging.
Chakrabarti has authored over 160 scholarly articles and pioneered undergraduate involvement in space research, including a student-led NASA-funded rocket experiment. At UMass Lowell, his group continues instrument development for forest carbon assessment and exoplanet studies.
Professional service includes roles on advisory boards, technical journal editing, and conference proceedings. The Center for Space Physics under his leadership became a national leader in space research through strategic initiatives.
