Professor Sunil Dutt Maharaj is a leading theoretical physicist and mathematician at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), where he has served within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science since 1987. He has additionally held research affiliations with Jamia Millia Islamia (India), the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA, India), Eastern University (Sri Lanka), University of Cape Town and University of the Witwatersrand.
His research spans gravitational theory, general relativity, cosmology and mathematical physics, with special emphasis on exact solutions of Einstein’s equations, relativistic stellar models, modified gravity and gravitational thermodynamics. Employing sophisticated mathematical techniques—ranging from conformal symmetry analyses to perturbative methods—his work elucidates the structure of spacetimes, stability of relativistic stars and the validity of cosmic censorship.
Over a 35-year career he has produced more than 270 peer-reviewed publications (h-index 57) in top-tier journals such as Physical Review D, European Physical Journal C, Classical and Quantum Gravity and Journal of Mathematical Physics. His recent 2023 papers continue to investigate the geometry of compact objects, thermodynamic aspects of horizons and dynamics of charged fluids in higher-order gravity, underscoring a sustained focus on the interplay between geometry, matter and fundamental physics.
Funding from the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) of South Africa has underpinned extensive collaborative networks, reflected in both national and international co-authorship clusters.
