Sungwoo Jeong is a H.C. Wang Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Cornell University. He earned his Ph.D. from MIT in 2022 under the supervision of Alan Edelman, with a thesis focusing on intersections of linear algebra, Lie theory, and random matrices. His research emphasizes numerical linear algebra, random matrix theory, and their applications in algorithm design and statistical analysis.
Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics, MIT (2022).
Research interests include developing matrix factorization algorithms, analyzing eigenvalue statistics through Fredholm determinants, and exploring connections between discrete and continuous random matrix theory. His work bridges theoretical advancements with computational methods, such as deriving matrix factorizations and applying numerical techniques to study ghost beta random matrices.
Publications highlight contributions to determinantal point processes, matrix equations, and Cartan decomposition in random matrix ensembles. He received the Honorable Mention for the Householder Prize XXI (2022). Currently teaching MATH 4740: Stochastic Processes in Spring 2025.
