Sung Wan Kim

Sung Wan Kim is a Professor of Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Bioengineering at the University of Utah, serving as Director of the Center for Controlled Chemical Delivery since joining the institution in 1969.

His academic credentials include Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Chemistry from Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Utah (1969).

Dr. Kim pioneered biomaterials applications in drug delivery systems, with seminal work on blood-compatible polymers enabling polyurethane artificial heart development. His research spans protein absorption mechanics on polymer surfaces, platelet adhesion studies, and polymeric carriers for targeted therapeutic gene delivery—establishing foundational principles in controlled chemical release.
