Dr. Sung-Ching Lee is a Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in the Department Biogeochemical Integration, leading the Eco-Meteorology research group. Previously, he completed his Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. at the University of British Columbia (2016–2020, 2014–2016, 2009–2013) and served as a postdoctoral fellow (2020–2022). His research focuses on ecosystem-atmosphere interactions across forests, wetlands, and arid ecosystems.
- Education
- Ph.D. (2016–2020), University of British Columbia
- M.Sc. (2014–2016), University of British Columbia
- B.Sc. (2009–2013), National Taiwan University
Dr. Lee specializes in micrometeorological methods like eddy covariance, closed-chamber measurements, and stable isotope analysis to study carbon and water fluxes. His work explores climate change impacts through experimental manipulation and remote sensing, with recent publications analyzing methane mitigation in coastal wetlands, drought resilience in vegetation, and biogeochemical responses to wildfires.
Key research trends include:
- Climate feedback mechanisms in managed and natural ecosystems
- Scaling local flux measurements to regional carbon budgets
- Impacts of nutrient balances and salinity on greenhouse gas exchange
- Applications of machine learning in gap-filling ecological data
He currently works at the institute’s Jena, Germany location (Hans-Knöll-Straße 10) and maintains a personal website for project updates.
