Sumru Akcan is a Professor in the Department of Foreign Language Education at Boğaziçi University, specializing in second language teaching methodology and teacher education. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona (2002) and has extensive experience in both research and pedagogy.
Her research focuses on language teacher education, blended learning, and qualitative methods in TESOL. Notable projects include studies on novice teacher adaptation (2017–2020) and blended-learning implementation in teacher training (2012–2014). She has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes, including works on ELF5 conference proceedings and innovative teaching practices.
Dr. Akcan teaches courses such as Second Language Teaching Methods, Research Methods in TEFL, and Materials Evaluation. She has presented at international conferences like ATEE, IATEFL, and WorldCALL, contributing to discussions on teacher socialization, cooperative learning, and educational technology integration.
Her research projects emphasize practical applications of pedagogical theory, including studies on feedback mechanisms in teacher training and the implementation of European Language Portfolios in Turkish classrooms. She maintains active involvement in academic publishing and serves as a mentor for pre-service language teachers.
