Sumi Lee is a Professor in Fashion Design at Otis College of Art and Design (Los Angeles, CA), where she has taught since 2004 (after part-time roles from 1997–2003). Her practice merges handcraft with contemporary design, emphasizing sustainability through techniques like upcycled garment construction and Shibori dyeing.
- Education: BFA with honors in Fashion Design (1985–1989), Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design
Lee's research explores the intersection of fashion and art via non-traditional abstract draping, indigo dyeing traditions, and experimental fashion illustration using Sumie-ink and rice paper. Her work challenges digital production norms by highlighting the irreplaceable value of manual processes.
Notable awards include multiple Faculty Development Grants (2008–2019) for workshops in Japan, France, and Australia, supporting her exploration of global textile heritage. She authored Instructive Flats for Fashion Designers (2015), a textbook teaching technical fashion illustration.
Lee exhibits internationally, including solo shows at Seoul's Nagwonjang Gallery (2024) and group exhibitions in Korea (2018). She organizes Sumindigo workshops in Japan and France, mentoring Otis alumni and industry professionals.
