Sumanta Basu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Cornell University. His research focuses on statistical machine learning for analyzing complex, high-dimensional systems in biology and finance. He has held grants from NSF (including a CAREER award) and NIH, supporting projects on financial networks, metabolomics, and gene expression dynamics. He holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and BStat/MStat degrees from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
Education:
- PhD in Statistics, University of Michigan (2014)
- Bachelor's and Master's in Statistics, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (2006/2008)
Research Interests: Network modeling of time series, high-order interaction detection in biological systems, and applications in finance, metabolomics, and prostate cancer research. He develops methods for large-scale data integration and interpretable machine learning models.
Grants & Awards:
- NSF CAREER Award (DMS-2239102)
- NIH R01GM135926 (Joint DMS/NIGMS Initiative)
- Multiple NSF grants (DMS-1812128, DMS-2210675)
Advising & Labs: Collaborates with scientists and economists on projects involving financial risk, biological systems, and omics data. Leads development of R packages like RandomForestsGLS and bigtime for analyzing dependent data.
