Suleiman Ramzi Hodali is a President's Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of California, Riverside. His academic journey began at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned his B.A. in Comparative Literature & Middle Eastern and North African Studies, followed by his M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature.
Dr. Hodali's research focuses on the intersections of literature, empire, and geography, with particular attention to representations of the Holy Land in Western literature from the Romantic period through the early 20th century. His interdisciplinary approach combines literary analysis with historical and theoretical frameworks to examine the relationship between cultural production and imperial power.
His recent publications explore themes of spatial politics, postcolonial resistance, and imperial knowledge production. These include "Encampment against Enclosure" (2025), "Cartographies of Affiliation in the Global South" (2024), and "Necromancing the Stones" (2023), which collectively demonstrate his commitment to understanding how cultural narratives shape and are shaped by imperial projects.
Dr. Hodali's work has been recognized through the prestigious President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, which supports outstanding scholars in the final stages of their postdoctoral work. Under the mentorship of Professor Crystal Baik, he continues to develop his research on "New Jerusalems and Modern Crusades: Holy Lands in the Imaginative Geography of Empire."
