Prof. Dr. Sule BARAN (Sakarya University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology) is a leading Turkish acarologist specializing in Oribatida mites. With over 30 years of academic service, she teaches courses like Invertebrate Animals Systematics, Soil Ecology, and Acari Taxonomy. Her research focuses on systematic revisions of soil mites, ecological distribution patterns, and chemical interactions in microhabitats.
- Academic tenure: 1990s-present
- SACAD Fellow (Soil Acari Analysis & Discovery)
- Editorial board: Acarological Studies
Her fieldwork spans Turkey's Marmara, Black Sea, and Mediterranean regions, with over 50 published articles and 15 supervised Master's theses. Notable contributions include 14 new species descriptions, 8 genus first records, and 6 family level discoveries in Turkish soil ecosystems. She has led 4 major BAP research projects and served as principal investigator for 3 international collaborations.
Current research trends analyze seasonal variation in mite populations, chemical ecology of soil fauna, and geometric morphometric tools for taxonomic differentiation. Recent 2025 work on Spinozetidae family expands Turkey's known acarine diversity.
