Sukalpa Basu is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts & Sciences. They teach the General Physics sequence (PHYS 101 and 102) and advocate for active learning methodologies in the classroom. They also serve as an academic advisor in Penn’s Pre-Health Post-Baccalaureate Program.
Educational background includes a Ph.D. from Temple University (2010), M.S. from University of Calcutta (2002), and B.S. (Honors) from St. Xavier’s College, India (2000). Notable honors include the 2022 Liberal and Professional Studies Distinguished Teaching Award and the 2022 UPCEA Excellence in Teaching Award.
Research focuses on theoretical and computational condensed matter physics, particularly strongly correlated electron systems, heavy fermion materials, single impurity models, and Kondo lattices. Publications explore phase transitions in cerium alloys and nonlinear dynamics in lattice systems.
Recipient of multiple scholarships and fellowships, including the Peter-Havaas Scholarship (2008) and Jawaharlal Nehru Summer Research Fellowship (1999). Active in pedagogical innovation and undergraduate/post-baccalaureate mentorship.
