Sudan Prasad Neupane is a Researcher at the Division of Mental Health and Addiction within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. He holds a Medical degree (2007), an MPhil in International Health (2011), and a PhD in Psychoneuroimmunology and Addiction Medicine from UiO (2015). His academic journey includes a postdoc at Sykehuset Innlandet (2015-2019), research scientist position at UiO since 2015, a visiting scholar position at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2018-2019), and a Senior Researcher position at the Center of Excellence Oral Health, Rogaland since 2020.
Dr. Neupane's research focuses on the intersection of immunology and mental health, with particular expertise in psychoneuroimmunology, comorbid psychiatric disorders, addiction neurobiology, and suicidology. His work explores the connections between gut-brain communication, inflammation, and mental health conditions, with special attention to alcohol use disorders, depression, and suicide. He has made significant contributions to the Global Burden of Disease Study, particularly in areas related to mental health, suicide, and substance use.
His research program consistently examines the biological underpinnings of mental health conditions, particularly the role of inflammatory processes in psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviors. Dr. Neupane's work bridges clinical psychiatry with immunological research, creating novel approaches to understanding and treating complex mental health conditions, especially in the context of developing countries and health equity issues.

Dr. Neupane has supervised numerous research projects and students, with a focus on training the next generation of researchers in psychoneuroimmunology and global mental health. His work has been supported by multiple competitive grants from national and international funding agencies. He collaborates extensively with researchers across disciplines including psychiatry, immunology, dentistry, and public health.
Currently, Dr. Neupane leads research projects examining biological factors in the association between depression and periodontitis, depression among Eritrean immigrants in Oslo, genetic factors in emotional dysregulation related to self-harm, immunological factors in suicidal behavior, and neurobiological explanations for comorbid depression in patients with alcohol use disorders.
