Subramaniam Rajan

Subramaniam Rajan is a Professor at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University, where he has been since 1983. He directs the Computational Mechanics Lab and focuses on finite element analysis, design optimization, and high-performance computing.

• Education: Ph.D. and M.S. in Structural Mechanics (University of Iowa, 1983 and 1979), B. Tech. in Civil Engineering (IIT-Kharagpur, 1978).

His research spans composite material modeling, microelectronic packaging, impact mitigation, and biomechanics, with funding from NSF, NASA, FAA, and private firms like Honeywell and Mayo Clinic. Recent projects include MAT213 for impact analysis and 3D concrete printing.

Publications include textbooks such as Intermediate Structural Analysis and Design (2021), Object-Oriented Numerical Methods via C++ (2018), and Finite Elements for Engineers (2025). His teaching covers structural analysis, finite element methods, and engineering software development.

Key service roles include chairing ASCE subcommittees and leading curriculum development at ASU. He also developed educational software tools like GS-USA Frame for structural analysis and SlideTray for productivity.
