Stéphane Lemaire is a Lecturer in Metaethics and Philosophy of Mind at the University of Rennes 1, Department of Philosophy. He serves as Vice-Director of the Atlantic Center for Philosophy—Rennes team (CAPHI) and is a full member appointed to the CNU, section 17, college B. His academic career spans multiple research projects and leadership roles within the philosophical community.
His educational background includes a PhD from Université Paris 4 (Sorbonne) in 2003. His research focuses on metaethics, normative ethics, philosophy of mind, and their connections, with particular emphasis on affective and desiring life in descriptive and normative aspects.
Lemaire's research interests span metaethics, philosophy of mind, theory of emotions, and well-being. He investigates emotions, their nature and normative character; happiness and well-being, particularly subjectivist theories; adaptive preferences, nudges, and autonomy; and sentimentalisms and rationalisms in metaethics. His work bridges theoretical philosophy with practical applications in understanding human emotional and moral experiences.
His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly output in leading philosophy journals, with a focus on the intersection of emotion theory, value theory, and metaethics. His work shows a progression from foundational questions about desires and intentions to more nuanced explorations of emotional appropriateness, subjectivism about well-being, and the evaluative nature of emotions. He frequently collaborates with other prominent philosophers in the field, particularly in French and European philosophical circles.
Lemaire has received recognition through participation in significant research projects including ANR VALFREE (2017-2022) on the value of freedom, and ANR REACT (2021-2024) on reactive practices. He has also served on multiple thesis committees and assessment panels for prestigious journals.
As an academic mentor, Lemaire supervises doctoral students and has participated in numerous thesis defenses. He has organized multiple conferences and workshops, particularly in the areas of metaethics, emotions, and well-being. His leadership extends to coordinating the Metaethics Seminar for CAPHI and serving as co-coordinator of the UFR site.
