Stuart Poyntz

Stuart Poyntz is a Professor at the School of Communication, Simon Fraser University, and served as School Director from 2021 to 2024. He previously held leadership roles as Associate Dean (2016-2019) and Acting Dean (2019) in SFU’s Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, and was Education Director at Vancouver’s Cinematheque for over a decade.

• Current role: Associate School Director, supporting new leadership
• Research focus: Urban schooling models, space and youth experiences in cities
• Key initiatives: School of Communication’s 50th Anniversary celebrations (2023), media production studio renovations, and graduate research lab expansions

His academic work emphasizes community-engaged research through SFU’s Community Engaged Research Initiative. Poyntz values sustained student relationships and plans to return to teaching post-directorship. A co-edited book Critical Futures: Community-Engaged Research in a Time of Social Transformation (co-authored with Am Johal and Kari Grain) is scheduled for 2025 publication.
