Stuart Martin is a Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology. He serves as Interim Chair of his department and Deputy Director of the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), where he co-leads the Hormone-Related Cancers program focusing on breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. In 2020, he was awarded the Drs. Angela and Harry Brodie Endowed Professorship in Translational Cancer Research.
- PhD, University of California-San Diego (Biomedical Sciences with molecular cell biology, pharmacology, and physiology)
- Postdoctoral training, Harvard Medical School (Leder Laboratory, breast cancer models, functional genomics)
Martin’s research investigates how cytoskeletal dynamics influence cell survival and metastasis, particularly focusing on microtentacles in breast cancer cells. His work combines functional genomic screening, proteomics, and in vivo tumor imaging using bioluminescent models. His lab develops microfluidic assays to quantify metastatic propensity and employs computational analysis of patient datasets to identify survival genes.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in lipid tethering surfaces (TetherChip), calcium signaling in cancer, and mechanoactivation of ROS pathways. His team includes Michele Vitolo (1st Officer), Keyata Thompson (1st Lieutenant), and trainees Julia Ju, David Annis, and others.
