Stuart Madnick is the John Norris Maguire (1960) Professor of Information Technology at MIT Sloan School of Management and Affiliate Faculty at MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS). He is Founding Director of Cybersecurity at MIT Sloan (CAMS), leading research on managerial aspects of cybersecurity since 1979. Madnick holds a PhD in Computer Science from MIT (1972) and has served over 50 years as MIT faculty. He heads the Cybersecurity at MIT Sloan Initiative, formerly known as the (IC)³ Consortium.
Madnick’s research focuses on cybersecurity governance, cyber-risk economics, regulatory compliance, and critical infrastructure protection. His work spans 300+ publications, including foundational texts like Computer Security (1979). He advises major corporations, cofounded five tech firms, and operates Langley Castle Hotel in England.
Recent research highlights include analyzing UN cybersecurity treaties vs. GDPR, catastrophe bond applications for cyber-insurance markets, and board-level cybersecurity governance. He emphasizes balancing innovation with security in digital trade, 5G technology, and AI ethics.
