Stuart Firestein serves as Professor of Biological Sciences and Provost's Senior Faculty Teaching Scholar at Columbia University. His laboratory investigates cellular mechanisms of signal transduction and olfaction, using vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons as models to study receptor-ligand interactions, second messenger modulation, ion channel gating, and adaptation mechanisms. The research employs adenovirus vectors to overexpress cloned odor receptors, enabling study of ligand-binding affinities and structure-function relationships in G-protein coupled receptors.
Firestein's work examines the unique regenerative capacity of olfactory neurons, quantifying biophysical parameters in developing neurons through physiological techniques. His interdisciplinary approach combines electrophysiology, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, and anatomical methods to address fundamental questions about olfactory coding and neuronal development.
His publications demonstrate sustained focus on olfactory neurobiology, with recent work exploring neurogenesis, cortical organization, and the role of olfactory receptors in systemic physiology. The research has expanded to include microbial interactions with host physiology and advanced imaging techniques for protein structure analysis.
