Stoimir Kolarević

Dr. Stoimir Kolarević is a Principal Research Fellow at the Department of Hydroecology and Water Protection at the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" (IBISS), part of the University of Belgrade. Born in 1984 in Sisak, Croatia, he completed his undergraduate and doctoral studies at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, with his doctoral work focusing on Microbiology. Since January 1, 2020, he has been employed as a senior research associate at IBISS, continuing research that began in 2011 at the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biology.

Dr. Kolarević's research focuses on the intersection of microbiology and eco/genotoxicology, with particular emphasis on investigating the impact of wastewater on surface water quality and organisms inhabiting freshwater and marine ecosystems. His work employs various biomonitoring approaches and genotoxicity assessment methods to evaluate environmental quality, particularly along major river systems like the Danube. He has been actively involved in international monitoring efforts including the Joint Danube Survey.

His research portfolio demonstrates strong focus on water quality assessment, antimicrobial resistance patterns in river systems, biomonitoring techniques using various organisms, and genotoxicity evaluation methods. He has contributed to numerous studies examining the effects of wastewater, microplastics, and other pollutants on aquatic ecosystems.

Dr. Kolarević has received recognition for his work, including a best presentation award at an international conference in 2022 and a prestigious FEMS fellowship completed in 2019. Since 2024, he has served as Vice President of the Mutagenesis and Genotoxicology Section of the Serbian Genetic Society and as Serbia's representative in the European Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomic Society. He has also been participating in the Monitoring and Assessment Expert Group of the International Commission for Protection of the Danube River since 2014.

His professional contributions include significant involvement in environmental monitoring programs, particularly those focused on the Danube River basin, where he has contributed to understanding the relationships between faecal pollution, antimicrobial resistance, and overall water quality across multiple countries.
