Stijn van Kessel is a Professor of Comparative Politics at Queen Mary University of London, joining in 2017. His primary research focuses on populism, the radical right, Euroscepticism, and European integration. He leads the COST Action project ‘Linking Euroscepticism and Populism’ and has held visiting positions at institutions including Leuven and WZB Berlin. Previously, he held a Humboldt Fellowship (2013-2015). Academic outputs include over 30 peer-reviewed articles and co-edited works like Populist Radical Right Parties in Action (under contract, 2025).
Education: BSc/MSc (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), DPhil (University of Sussex). Key grants include a £727k ESRC project on populist party activism and a £241k Brexit grant. Supervised PhD students include Ziyi Huang (party-movement relations) and Freddie Larden (left-wing populism).
Research highlights include analyzing pro-European activism post-Brexit, EU integration challenges, and the organizational resilience of radical right parties. Editor of the Routledge Extremism & Democracy series. Active in policy engagement via media commentary and advisory roles for Team Populism.
