Stewart Diemont is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Biology at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. His research focuses on traditional ecological knowledge, agroforestry systems, and ecological restoration, with particular emphasis on indigenous Maya practices. He directs the Restoration Science Center and advises graduate students in environmental biology and conservation.
Research interests span:
- Traditional agroforestry systems and soil fertility
- Cultural ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation
- Urban food systems and community resilience
- Ecological engineering for sustainable restoration
Publications demonstrate strong focus on Latin American agroecology, urban sustainability, and interdisciplinary approaches to ecosystem management. Recent articles explore socioecological dimensions of traditional farming during the pandemic, avian diversity in agroforests, and remote sensing for lake conservation.
Current advisees include five graduate students researching conservation biology, environmental science, and indigenous knowledge systems. Laboratory activities are centered in Illick Hall with field sites in Mexico and Guatemala.
