Stewart A. Shankman is the Dunbar Professor of Bipolar Disease and holds dual appointments as Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. He directs the NEAR Lab (Northwestern Emotion and Resilience Laboratory), where he leads innovative research on mood disorders.
His research focuses on:
- Neural mechanisms of psychomotor disturbance in depression
- Bipolar disorder pathophysiology
- Adolescent mental health interventions
- Digital phenotyping through smartphone monitoring
- Emotion regulation and resilience biomarkers
Dr. Shankman currently leads the clinical trial Social Processing in Remitted Adolescent Depression, investigating mood-phone usage relationships in teens using a 12-month smartphone app protocol. The study involves multimodal assessment including neuroimaging and behavioral tracking.
Honors include:
- Endowed Dunbar Professorship for research excellence in bipolar disease
He serves as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded projects through Northwestern's Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS). His work bridges clinical psychology, neuroscience, and digital health technology.
