Prof. Dr. Steven de Jong is a Professor in the Department of Medical Oncology at the University of Groningen and affiliated with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). His research focuses on understanding chemosensitivity mechanisms in testicular germ cell tumors, enhancing apoptosis in cancer cells, and identifying novel drug targets in ovarian and cervical cancers. He leads the 'Cancer' research team within the TIPharma group.
Education: BSc/MSc in Biology from the University of Groningen (RUG), PhD in Medical Oncology (1991), postdoctoral research at the Burnham Institute (La Jolla, CA). Academic roles include Professor of Preclinical and Translational Oncology (2011–present).
Research interests span drug resistance in cancers, patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, and targeted therapies. Collaborations include national/international projects like the EurOPDX infrastructure and Dutch Cancer Society grants.
Key projects: Identification of genetic factors for Wee1 inhibition efficacy in ovarian cancer, exploration of mTORC1/2 inhibition in ovarian clear cell carcinoma, and synthetic lethality strategies for ARID1A-mutant cancers.
Labs/Teams: Oversees a research group with multiple PhD students and technicians, including work on kinome profiling, epigenetic regulation, and drug discovery.
