Steven Scherwatzky is Interim Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Merrimack College, holding a dual role as Professor of English. His academic leadership spans administrative and pedagogical domains, complemented by specialization in 18th-century British literature and Enlightenment thought. Scherwatzky earned his B.A. from Boston College (English and Philosophy) and all advanced degrees (M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D.) in English from Rutgers University.
Research & Expertise: Focuses on intersections between 17th- and 18th-century British literature, politics, and intellectual history, with deep expertise in John Milton and Samuel Johnson. Recent work explores Johnson’s autobiographical writing and political thought, exemplified in peer-reviewed publications like New Essays on Samuel Johnson (2018) and Theology and Literature in the Age of Johnson (2012).
Awards: Recognized with the Roddy Award for Excellence in Teaching (2005), affirming commitment to undergraduate education. His scholarship emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to literary-historical analysis.
