Steven Michael Kahn is the Cassius Lamb Kirk Professor in the Natural Sciences and Professor and Chair of Physics at Stanford University. He also holds a joint appointment as Professor of Particle Physics and Astrophysics at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. His research focuses on experimental astrophysics, including X-ray spectroscopy of active galactic nuclei, galaxy clusters, supernova remnants, and the intergalactic medium. He pioneered experimental measurements critical to modern X-ray astronomy and led the design of the X-ray reflection grating array for the XMM-Newton Satellite. As Director of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), he oversees a major project set to operationalize in 2022.
Key contributions include foundational work with HEAO-1, Einstein, and EXOSAT observatories. His interdisciplinary approach bridges theoretical calculations and observational data, enabling novel insights into cosmic phenomena. Awards include Fellowships from the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
While no specific grants or advising records are detailed, his leadership roles at SLAC and LSST highlight his influence in shaping large-scale astrophysics initiatives. The LSST, once operational, will revolutionize time-domain astronomy through comprehensive sky surveys.
