Steven Metcalf

Dr. Steven Metcalf is an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Thermal Energy Technologies at the University of Warwick’s School of Engineering. He holds an MEng and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Warwick (2004 and 2009, respectively). His research focuses on thermally driven heat pumps, gas-fired heat pumps, heat storage systems, and low-temperature heat networks. He leads the ES3B5 Engines and Heat Pumps module and contributes to gas cycles and refrigeration laboratory teaching.

His research has been supported by grants from BEIS, EPSRC, EU, and industry partners. Notably, he led a BEIS-funded project (2018–2022) developing gas-fired heat pumps as a transitional energy solution for domestic heating. He represents the UK in IEA Annexes on thermally driven heat pumps and collaborates internationally through the European Heat Pump Association.

Research interests span gas-fired heat pumps, adsorption systems, and low-emission heating technologies. His work aims to reduce gas consumption in domestic heating (30–40% reduction) while supporting grid upgrades for electric heat pumps.

Selected projects include the LoT-NET (EPSRC, 2019–2024) and Mitsubishi Electric’s Domestic Heat Pumps project (2024–2027). He advises students on sustainable technology projects and has contributed to over 20 peer-reviewed articles on thermal systems, adsorption materials, and energy efficiency.
