Steven Metallo is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at Georgetown University. His interdisciplinary research bridges chemical biology, biophysical chemistry, and surface chemistry, focusing on:
- Small molecule binders of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs)
- Macromolecular crowding effects on nucleic acids and protein-nucleic acid interactions
- Engineering protein-surface interactions for nanotechnology applications
His work on c-Myc inhibitors has implications for cancer therapy, and he collaborates with medical researchers to improve drug efficacy. Publications highlight breakthroughs in understanding IDP-small molecule interactions and developing methods for oriented protein attachment to nanoparticles.
Scientific Awards:
- Featured in C&ENews (2009) as outstanding chemistry achievement
His research explores the physical-chemical properties of cellular environments, including noncanonical nucleic acid structures and transcription factor behavior under macromolecular crowding conditions.
Education:
- A.B. (1992), College of the Holy Cross
- Ph.D. (1998), Yale University
- NIH Postdoctoral Fellow (1998-2001), Harvard University
