Steven McCulloch is a Senior Lecturer in Human-Animal Studies and Programme Leader for the BA Animal Welfare and Society at the University of Winchester. He holds a veterinary degree from the University of Bristol, a BA in Philosophy from Birkbeck College, and a PhD from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) on the British animal policy process. His research focuses on animal welfare science, ethics, and policy, particularly the inclusion of sentient animals' interests in government decisions. He is a diplomat of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (ECAWBM) and serves as head of research for the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation.
McCulloch's work emphasizes animal welfare impact assessments (AWIA) and ethical analysis in policy, with notable contributions to Brexit's implications for animal welfare, badger culling debates, and wildlife trade reforms. He is a Section Editor for Animals journal and coordinates the In Practice 'Everyday Ethics' column. His research spans diverse topics including stray cat management, dolphin sentience, and fur farming policy.
