Steven Maynard is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of History at Queen's University. He holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. from Queen's University and Mount Allison University respectively. His research focuses on Canadian social history, particularly the history of sexuality, with interests in archival theory and Foucault studies. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the Department of History’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2018, 2011) and the Principal’s Teaching Award (2016).
Maynard’s work critically examines queer history, homonationalism, and the intersection of state policies with LGBTQ+ communities. He co-chairs the Canadian Committee on the History of Sexuality and serves as a book review editor for the Journal of the History of Sexuality. His publications span articles on queer historiography, policing, and the ethics of apology. He teaches courses on queer Canadian history, archives, and Foucault’s impact on historical analysis.
Key awards include the W. Kaye Lamb Prize (2010) for archival scholarship and recognition for groundbreaking articles on queer history in the late 20th century. Maynard also engages in public outreach, consulting on educational projects about LGBTQ+ figures like Jim Egan. His research emphasizes the politicization of history and the ethical challenges of reconciling past injustices with contemporary narratives.
He supervises graduate students in Canadian social history and sexuality studies, fostering interdisciplinary engagement. His recent work critiques the liberal state’s role in LGBTQ+ inclusion and the paradoxes of national apologies for historical injustices.
