He has been at USC since 1980, specializing in cerebrovascular neurosurgery, cranial base surgery, and stereotactic radiosurgery. His research focuses on cerebral blood flow, aneurysm treatment, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and healthcare disparities. He has pioneered hyperdynamic therapy for cerebral vasospasm and developed comprehensive approaches for cerebrovascular conditions like aneurysms, meningiomas, and acoustic neuromas.
Education: MD and residency at the University of Michigan. He collaborates with otolaryngology teams for complex cranial base lesions and leads international studies (e.g., VISAS-K1/K2). His clinical interests include minimally invasive techniques, robotic neurosurgery, and addressing racial/economic disparities in neurosurgical care.
Research emphasizes AVM biology, tumor consistency grading, and surgical outcomes. He has authored/co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed articles and chairs committees in neurosurgery education and policy. His lab investigates epigenetic mechanisms in meningiomas and AVMs.
Notable contributions include Gamma Knife radiosurgery protocols for trigeminal neuralgia and meningiomas, as well as innovations in endovascular and microvascular surgical techniques. He advocates for standardized neurosurgery training and has shaped national guidelines in neuroendovascular surgery.
