Steven K. Vogel

Steven K. Vogel is a Professor of Political Science and Political Economy at the University of California, Berkeley, and holds the Il Han New Professorship of Asian Studies. He directs the Political Economy Program and specializes in the political economy of advanced industrialized nations, particularly Japan. Vogel has taught at UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and Harvard University, and has authored influential works including Marketcraft: How Governments Make Markets Work (2018) and Japan Remodeled (2006). His research critiques conventional market theories, emphasizing government roles in shaping markets.

Education: B.A. in Political Science from Princeton University (1979), Ph.D. in Political Science from UC Berkeley (1986).

Research focuses on regulatory reform, U.S.-Japan relations, and comparative political economy. He has contributed to popular media through columns in Newsweek-Japan and Asahi Shimbun, as well as freelance journalism in France.

He has received major awards for scholarship and teaching, including the Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize for Freer Markets, More Rules (1996) and recognition for mentorship at UC Berkeley. His edited works include his mother's The Japanese Family in Transition (2013) and a volume on U.S.-Japan relations (2002).
