Steven J. McMichael is an Associate Professor of Theology at the University of St. Thomas, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on medieval theology, interfaith relations, and Franciscan studies. He teaches courses such as Medieval Theology and Honors Influential Women, emphasizing historical contexts of faith, mysticism, and religious interactions with Jews and Muslims.
His research explores themes like the resurrection of Jesus in medieval thought, Christian-Jewish-Muslim polemics, and Franciscan spirituality. Recently, he has edited the Medieval Franciscans series (Brill Publishers) and published works on Franciscan encounters with non-Christians, medieval sermons, and Holocaust-era Catholic responses.
McMichael has presented widely on topics including Muslim-Christian relations and John Paul II's pontificate. His articles analyze medieval apologetics, eschatology, and the legacy of figures like Francis of Assisi. Current projects include studies on fifteenth-century Easter sermons and the theology of Roberto de Lecce and Bernardino da Siena.
He coordinates the College of Arts and Sciences' interdisciplinary programs and advises students in theology and honors studies. His work bridges medieval theological debates with modern interfaith dialogue, emphasizing historical roots of contemporary religious issues.
