Steven J Schwulst, MD, FACS, FCCM is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery (Trauma and Critical Care) at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He is affiliated with Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS).
Dr. Schwulst received his BA from Northwestern University (1999) and MD from the University of Illinois, Chicago (2003). His postgraduate training included residency in General Surgery and fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in both Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.
His research focuses on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), which causes over one-third of trauma-related deaths in young adults. His laboratory investigates four key areas: macrophage heterogeneity in TBI-induced immune dysfunction (NIH K08), microglial activation in chronic neurodegeneration (NIH R01), gut microbiome interactions with neurocognitive outcomes (NIH R01), and development of a ferret model of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (NIH R21). His work reveals the complex interplay between microglia, peripheral immunity, and the gut microbiome in chronic neuroinflammation following TBI.
Dr. Schwulst's research spans Neuroscience, Immunology, and Trauma Surgery, with significant findings on gut-brain axis connections in TBI, therapeutic antibody development, and age-related differences in TBI outcomes. His recent publications demonstrate progress in understanding how microbiome influences neuroinflammation and identifying potential therapeutic targets.

Dr. Schwulst serves on the Basic and Translational Science Committee of the Association for Academic Surgery, is a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and serves on editorial boards for Shock and Frontiers in Medicine. He is actively involved in medical education as a member of the Feinberg School of Medicine Executive Admissions Committee.
His laboratory continues to advance understanding of TBI pathophysiology with current research supported by multiple NIH grants investigating different aspects of TBI and potential therapeutic interventions.
