Steven Hirschler is a Senior Lecturer in Social Sciences within the School of Humanities at York St John University. He joined in 2018, following roles at Edge Hill University and the University of York. His education includes a BA in Political Science and International Relations from UCLA, and an MA and PhD in Politics from the University of York.
His research focuses on migration, immigration control, and law, examining state and non-state tactics to manage populations and their consequences. A secondary focus is on media representations of marginalized groups in interactive media like video games. He teaches Criminology and Sociology modules across all academic levels, including victimology, inequality, and qualitative research methods.
Hirschler chairs the York Business School Research Ethics Committee and serves as a Postgraduate Research Lead. His work emphasizes qualitative methods to highlight individual experiences of systemic issues.
