Steven Grover, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor of Hematology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that contribute to adverse cardiovascular events in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and targeted therapies, with particular emphasis on cancer therapy-associated thrombosis and cardiotoxicity.
Dr. Grover's research program investigates the molecular basis of pathological activation of coagulation and venous thromboembolism, with special focus on the role of C1-inhibitor, the intrinsic pathway of coagulation, and plasma kallikrein in thrombosis development. His laboratory employs clinical epidemiological approaches to identify novel associations between emerging cancer therapies and cardiovascular complications, which then inform highly translational preclinical studies using transgenic mouse models to uncover mechanistic insights into the underlying pathogenesis. Current work focuses on identifying novel approaches to prevent cancer therapy-associated pathologies with the goal of improving quality of life for cancer patients.
Dr. Grover's publication record demonstrates a consistent research trajectory focused on venous thromboembolism, coagulation disorders, and cancer-associated thrombosis. His most recent work explores the relationship between hereditary angioedema and venous thromboembolism, plasma kallikrein's FXII-independent functions in thrombin generation, and genetic factors influencing thrombosis risk. The research spans from basic molecular mechanisms to clinical epidemiology, with growing emphasis on translational applications for novel anticoagulant development.
Dr. Grover has received numerous prestigious awards recognizing his contributions to the field:
- Eberhard F Mammen Award, Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 2024
- Kenneth M Brinkhous Prize, American Heart Association, 2024
- Travel Award, International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2023
- Abstract Achievement Award, American Society of Hematology, 2022
- Junior Faculty Development Award, UNC Chapel Hill, 2022
The Grover Lab, based at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Division of Hemostasis and Thrombosis, recently secured its first R01 award from NHLBI in August 2024, marking a significant milestone in the lab's research program. The laboratory maintains expertise in transgenic mouse models of thrombosis, whole blood coagulation assays, and translational studies connecting molecular mechanisms to clinical outcomes. Recent news highlights include presentations at major conferences, publications featured in editorials, and the welcoming of new postdoctoral researchers to the team.
