Steven Goldstein is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh specializing in African archaeology. His research examines long-term relationships between food systems, mobility, and climate change over the last 12,000 years in eastern/southeastern Africa.
Field projects in Kenya and Zambia investigate spread of pastoralism, agricultural origins, and hunter-gatherer responses to environmental stress. Research applies lithic analysis, GIS, and geoarchaeological methods to study social-economic transformations.
Current fieldwork focuses on historical impacts of African states and European colonialism on food security systems. Dr. Goldstein directs multiple collaborative projects including Kakapel Archaeological Project and Origins of Agriculture in Zambia initiative.
