Steven E. Lobell is a Professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Utah. His career spans over two decades, with academic appointments dating back to 2004. He holds a PhD from UCLA and has been recognized with multiple awards, including the CSBS Super Research Senior Award and a Fulbright Scholar award.

Lobell's research focuses on neoclassical realism, the political economy of security, and great power competition. He explores how systemic power shifts interact with domestic politics to influence foreign policy, including crisis dynamics, nuclear proliferation prevention, and the durability of international trading orders. His recent work addresses balancing strategies in a granular framework.
His publications include 25 peer-reviewed articles and 9 books, such as Understanding Near Crises and Escalation in World Politics (2025) and A Granular Theory of Balancing (2018). His research has been featured in International Studies Quarterly, Security Studies, and Cambridge Review of International Affairs.
He has received grants from the Office of Naval Research (DoD), Israel Institute, and Nobel Institute to study power projection, nuclear proliferation, and balance of power dynamics. His professional engagements include presentations at NATO HQ, Atlantic Council, and Notre Dame International Security Center.
