Steven Berkley serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of San Diego, where he joined as a Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow in Fall 2021. His teaching focuses on developmental psychology, specifically courses examining Black families and child/adolescent development, with future plans to teach lifespan development and a capstone seminar on the psychology of close relationships.
Dr. Berkley's research investigates sociocultural experiences of marginalized families and individuals in the United States, analyzing how familial protective factors interact with racialized experiences to influence adolescent and young adult well-being. His work emphasizes psychosocial health outcomes through frameworks of family dynamics and identity development.
He operates the REMPLab (remplab.org), which provides undergraduate research opportunities focused on marginalized family systems. His publications appear in Family Relations and Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to developmental psychology and health outcomes.
