Steven Bender is an Associate Dean for Planning and Strategic Initiatives and Professor of Law at Seattle University School of Law. He holds leadership roles such as co-president of the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) and founder of the AALS Section on Critical Theories. His expertise spans Real Estate Law, Social Justice, Technology and Ethics, and Immigration Law. Bender earned his B.S. in Political Science (1982) and J.D. (1985) from the University of Oregon.
His research focuses on critical legal theory, LatCrit movements, and systemic advocacy. Notable awards include the C. Clyde Ferguson, Jr., Award (recognizing scholarship, mentoring, and teaching) and the 2024 Great Teacher Award. He has authored over 50 law review articles and books, including *Critical Justice* (2021) and *LatCrit: From Critical Legal Theory to Academic Activism* (2021).
Bender’s publications address topics like racial justice, marijuana legalization, and immigration reform. He co-directs the TILE program (Technology, Innovation Law, and Ethics) and is a member of the American Law Institute and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.
