Dr. Steven Begg is a Reader in Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Advanced Engineering Centre (AEC) at the University of Brighton. His research focuses on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, propulsion systems, and alternative fuels, with an emphasis on experimental laser and optical measurement techniques. He has led over 30 projects, including grants from EPSRC, DfT/DTI/TSB, and European programs. As a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate engineering courses, emphasizing experiential learning and practical skill development.
Education: PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Brighton (2003). Current research interests include spray dynamics, two-phase flows, and energy systems. He supervises three PhD students and has mentored six successful PhD completions. Key collaborations include the NGSSM project (Next Generation Spray Simulation Model) and MariNH3 (Decarbonized Clean Marine Propulsion).
His work bridges academia and industry, with consultancy for automotive OEMs and Formula 1 teams. He serves on expert panels for EPSRC and journals like Fuel and Journal of Automobile Engineering. The Advanced Engineering Centre supports his research, focusing on innovation in propulsion and sustainable energy systems.
