Steve Völler is an Associate Professor for Sustainable Electrical Energy at the Department of Electric Energy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. He leads the NTNU Energy Team Solar and coordinates the bachelor education program in Electrical Engineering (BIELEKTRO). His roles include managing multiple NTNU Energy Teams (Solar, Battery, Hydrogen, Smartgrid, Hydropower) and leading groups in initiatives like GEMINI Solar Cells and Battery. He has extensive experience in research and industry collaboration, focusing on energy systems, renewable integration, and sustainable technologies.
Education highlights include a PhD in Energy Technology from the University of Wuppertal (2004-2010), a Master's in Electrical Engineering from Chemnitz University of Technology (1998-2003), and postdoctoral research at NTNU/SINTEF. His professional trajectory includes roles as a researcher at SINTEF Energy (2010-2017), postdoc in NOWITECH (2010-2012), and academic appointments since 2017.
Research interests span energy storage systems (including electric/hydrogen vehicles), offshore wind integration, microgrids, hydro power scheduling, and CO2-emission reduction strategies. His work emphasizes practical applications for industry, such as optimal power plant portfolio planning and grid stability solutions. He is also actively involved in student-led initiatives like GridVille (microgrid) and Nordlys NTNU (solar car).
Professional memberships include leadership roles in the Trøndelag Electric Car Association, Miljøagentene, and Norsk solenergiforening, alongside advisory roles at Bryte Batteries. He contributes to academic communities through roles in NTNU’s Fagforum Bærekraft and the IUG Subject Group Clean Energy (2021-2024).
