Steve Johnson is Professor and Dean of the College of Sciences at the University of New Orleans, affiliated with the Biological Sciences Department. His leadership encompasses academic administration and active research in evolutionary and conservation biology.
Johnson's research focuses on conservation genetics, evolutionary ecology, evolution of sex, and host-parasite interactions. His work integrates field studies with genetic analyses to examine adaptation in freshwater ecosystems, particularly using snails, grasshoppers, and fish as model systems. Key interests include thermal tolerance mechanisms, predator-prey coevolution, and the genetic consequences of reproductive strategies.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2022-2006) reveals consistent emphasis on environmental adaptation and conservation genomics. Major themes include thermal physiology in variable climates, phylogeographic patterns in endemic species, and the evolutionary maintenance of sexual reproduction. His methodologies frequently employ next-generation sequencing, population genetic modeling, and field-based experimental ecology.
Johnson leads Johnson's Lab @ UNO, which maintains strong collaborations with Mexican conservation programs (particularly in Cuatro Ciénegas Valley) and U.S. wildlife agencies. His research has been supported by dissertation grants and undergraduate mentoring initiatives including UMEB: Mentoring Undergraduate Research in Conservation Biology and Ecology (2004).
